xs, s, m, l, xl

I like thinking about small houses as falling into five types of housing: XS, S, M, L, XL. It's nice when you think about the different demographics of people and which size housing would be appropriate for them depending on their needs. My breakdown for the square footage for these categories would look like this.

These numbers were derived off of a standard construction module which is 4 x 8, so the medium is  20 x 24. I think singles and couples would be great in the xs and small while larger households would be comfortable in the m, l or xl depending on their size. I'm working on designing the xs for now since it is maybe the most interesting in that structures under 200 sq ft do not have to be permitted, which I will talk about in a later post. For my household which is two people and two cats, I think the small would work just fine. At Home Depot they had a shed that was 16 x 20 called the Man Cave. We walked in it and it seemed perfect. I have since measured my living room and part of the kitchen which is the equivalent size and have imagined living in that space. If it was designed right I think I would quite like it!
